The 2025 Australia Day Honours List has acknowledged the remarkable achievements and contributions of three distinguished graduates from the University of Wollongong (UOW), highlighting their dedication to defence, community service, and sports medicine.

Honouring Dedication and Service

Captain Douglas John Griffiths RAN was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Military Division for his exceptional commitment to strengthening international engagement on behalf of the Australian Defence Force. His leadership and initiative have significantly enhanced Australia’s defence relationships, industry opportunities, and global reputation as a trusted military partner.

Ms Teresa Tran received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division for her extensive service to the Vietnamese community in Australia. Serving as the Honorary Federal Treasurer of the Vietnamese Community in Australia since 2000 and as President of the Vietnamese Community in Wollongong since 1999, Ms Tran has played a crucial role in fostering cultural ties and supporting humanitarian initiatives. Her dedication to community service extends to active participation in Wollongong City Council’s Living Books Program and numerous fundraising efforts. Notably, her husband, Hong-Phong Le, was also recognised with an OAM for his contributions to the Vietnamese community.

Mr Philip Driscoll was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division for his outstanding contributions to sports medicine. Since 1979, he has served as head of medical services for the Illawarra Hawks in the National Basketball League, ensuring the well-being of athletes. His expertise has also benefited the St George Illawarra Dragons, where he has been a sports trainer since 1999, following his tenure with the Illawarra Steelers. As a long-standing member of Sports Medicine Australia and a key advisor on community sports health, Mr Driscoll has left a lasting impact on the field.
