Melbourne Orientation Week Unveils Campus Canteen

A record-breaking 14,000 new students participated in over 200 Orientation activities at the University of Melbourne this week, transforming the campus into a vibrant hub of engagement and excitement ahead of the academic year.

The week featured the signature Melbourne Commencement Celebrations, peer mentor group meetups, live performances, sports and student services expos, and a chance to explore over 200 student clubs and societies at the Student Union (UMSU)’s Summerfest.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Emma Johnston actively participated in Orientation activities, including attending the Melbourne Commencement Celebration, engaging with students at UMSU’s Summerfest, and unveiling the new Campus Canteen alongside special guest Barry the Bear.

“Starting university is a significant milestone, and Orientation Week is designed to ensure our new students feel welcomed and supported,” Professor Johnston stated.

“With record numbers this year, it has been wonderful to witness students connecting, building friendships, and immersing themselves in campus life. Their enthusiasm and inspiring stories remind us why we continue to innovate and improve student experiences.”

Professor Johnston emphasized the importance of student support initiatives, highlighting the Campus Canteen as a key part of enhancing student life.

“Ensuring students have access to nutritious and affordable meals in a comfortable setting is essential. The Campus Canteen provides a space where students can enjoy good food, relax, and foster a sense of community,” she said.

Affordable and Nutritious Meals for Students

The Campus Canteen, co-created with students, is a vital new initiative addressing cost-of-living and food affordability challenges. Offering fresh, healthy meals for just $5, the canteen, located on Grattan Street at the Parkville campus, serves breakfast through dinner.

The University plans to use the Parkville location as a pilot project before launching another canteen at the Southbank campus later this year.

“We’ve listened to students and understand the financial pressures they face,” said University of Melbourne Provost, Professor Nicola Phillips. “The opening of the Parkville canteen marks a major step in ensuring students have access to affordable, high-quality meals while they navigate their academic journey.”

The initiative fosters a sense of community, with students playing an integral role in the design and implementation of the space.

“The Campus Canteen is more than just a place to eat; it’s a place for students to gather, connect, and build friendships,” Professor Phillips added. “Creating these spaces strengthens the overall student experience.”

A Tradition of Shared Dining

Located near the historic Prince Alfred Hotel, the refurbished canteen pays homage to the University’s rich tradition of shared dining. Featuring repurposed furniture from across campus and a nostalgic nod to Union House’s cafeteria, which served students from 1911 to the 1990s, the space blends history with modern student needs.

Meals will be provided by local supplier Carlton Providores, known for their decade-long history of serving students at Wilam Hall (formerly Medley Hall) with high-quality dining options.
