From July 2025, eligible Swinburne University students in teaching, nursing, and social work will receive a weekly government payment during mandatory unpaid placements, easing financial stress and supporting course completion. The means-tested initiative is a collaboration between Swinburne and the Australian Government.

New Government Support Payment for Swinburne Students on Unpaid Placements

From 1 July 2025, eligible Swinburne University students will benefit from a new federal initiative designed to reduce financial stress during mandatory, unpaid placements. The Commonwealth Prac Payment (CPP) will provide $331.65 per week throughout the duration of these placements.

In collaboration with the Australian Government, Swinburne will facilitate the CPP for eligible students enrolled in teaching, nursing, and social work programs. This initiative targets students completing full-time mandatory placements and aims to support their academic journey through to graduation and into the workforce.

Key Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be a domestic student

  • Enrolled in a Commonwealth Supported Place within teaching, nursing, or social work

  • Completing a full-time placement (minimum 30 hours per week)

  • Either receiving Commonwealth income support or able to demonstrate the need to work over 15 hours a week during study

The CPP is means-tested, ensuring support reaches the students who need it most. It is also benchmarked against the single Austudy rate, reinforcing its role as a significant support mechanism.

Mandatory placements often reduce students' ability to maintain paid employment, contributing to financial hardship and potentially impacting course completion and enrolment in high-demand fields. The CPP is a direct response to these challenges, aiming to alleviate pressure and improve student outcomes.

Swinburne and the Australian Government are currently developing the details of how the program will be delivered and how the payments will be distributed.
