The Genuine Student (GS) requirement was introduced on March 23, 2024. The GS requirement is a visa integrity measure conducted by the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) for every student visa application to ensure that all applicants for a student visa are a genuine applicant for entry.
The legislation supporting the GS and Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement is Ministerial Direction 106 and outlines important considerations that visa processing officers make when assessing whether a student meets the GS requirement or if a carer meets the GTE requirement. To be granted a student visa, an applicant must demonstrate they satisfy the GS requirement. For a parent or relative to be granted a Student Guardian visa, they must satisfy GTE the requirement.
Education providers can assess a prospective student’s and/or carers likelihood of meeting the GS and the GTE requirements. DE International conducts its own pre-screening assessment to determine whether a student has a reasonable chance of being granted a student visa. Should DE International not progress with issuing an offer letter based on responses to the GS pre-screening questions, it is important to note that students can still apply to study with another educational provider.
Please complete these questions honestly, in full and to the best of your knowledge. It is important that you answer these questions as a family as you may be contacted by a Department of Home Affairs case officer for a telephone interview asking similar questions once you submit your child’s student visa application. If you are unsure of the answers, please conduct research to ensure you can adequately respond to these questions. It is possible for a Student visa and/or a Student Guardian visa to be refused based on a GS and GTE statement or a telephone interview by immigration officers at the Department of Home Affairs.
